The Ghanaian Revolution (SIGNED COPY)
Jafint Co. London, 1988. First Edition, Hardcover (Original Cloth). As New/As New. 9781854210166 Signed by Author. Inscribed on the title page: "To Hugh, with best wishes, Joseph Amamoo London, Aug. 24, 1994". When in March 1957 Ghana became the first African country in colonial Africa to achieve Independence, the event was enthusiastically welcomed by millions of Africans and liberal non-Africans. Many African people looked up to Ghana with hope, confidence and pride. These people hoped that the torch of freedom would be held aloft in their own countries also. That Ghana had among the highest per capita income in Africa and the best developed educational and health facilities were but some of the factors establishing Ghana's position of stature in Africa. The question then is, how it comes about that beginning with such historic political and economic achievements, the country deteriorated through a series of military coups that eventually led to the bloody revolution of June 1979. Could the revolution have been avoided? What are the lessons that Ghana itself, and other African countries, can learn? "The Ghanaian Revolution" attempts, clearly and dispassionately, to answer these questions. Size: Octavo (standard book size). 234 pages. Douglass, Elisha P., Rebels and Democrats: The Struggle for Equal Political Rights and Majority Rule During the American Revolution
Douglass, Elisha P.
Rebels and Democrats: The Struggle for Equal Political Rights and Majority Rule During the American Revolution
Quadrangle Paperbacks, Chicago, Illinois, 1965. Third Printing. Paperback. Near Fine/N/A. red & brown titles spine (faded); cover design by Stu Gross; "While the colonists strove to break the tie with England, farmers and artisans saw the Revolution not as an end in itself but as a means of building a new society. This less privileged group within Revolutionary ranks was determined to obtain equal political rights for all adult males and a government in which the will of the majority of citizens would be the ultimate authority. Men of substance, though sincerely devoted to the cause of liberty, rejected schemes that might disturb the existing system. The ensuing struggle laid the foundation for a modern American democracy. The political and ideological controversies that developed out of the attempts to organize new state governments during the Revolutionary period are brought into sharp focus in this provocative study which shows that while the main stream was relatively conservative, this 'conservatism' of the Revolution was itself shaped by the existence of a movement farther to the left. No one after reading the book will feel inclined to dismiss his revolutionary democrats as minor characters in the play."; previous owner's name on pre-title page; including index - 368 pages. Hope, Christopher
White Boy Running
Abacus/Sphere, London, 1988. First Paperback Edition, Paperback. Very Good/N/A. 9780349100920 "The star of white, moderate, liberal opposition must have exploded light years ago and yet the news is only now filtering through. The sun is shining but it does not fool anyone. This is funeral weather. In 1987 the award-winning novelist Christopher Hope returned to his native South Africa for his first real visit in 12 years. He went to cover the May election, to assess the state of white South Africa, to follow the paths of his childhood, and to try to make sense of the place. Frequently he found only non-sense. He found South Africa so absurd, so mad and so incredible that this book - his first work of non-fiction - reads like a scalding black comedy."; 273 pages. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Nugent, Walter T. K., The Money Question During Reconstruction
Nugent, Walter T. K.
The Money Question During Reconstruction
W. W. Norton & Co. New York, 1967. First Edition, Paperback. Very Good/N/A. white titles spine; "Gold, silver, or greenbacks? For three decades after the Civil War the American people were baffled, irritated, and divided by a great debate over the recondite question of money. The end of slavery; reconstruction in the South; the unrest of farmers, workers, and city dwellers; the mushrooming of industrial enterprise; the new immigration: these great problems of the postwar era failed to dislodge money as the chief perennial issue in national politics. To the Populists and other grassroots movements, the financial legislation of the Reconstruction period was a conspiracy of the haves against the havenots, and at the heart of that conspiracy was the infamous 'Crime of '73,' the Coinage Act of February 12, 1873, which did away with silver as the monetary standard and placed gold in its stead. But to those on the other side, the men who had sponsored this very same Act were the embattled guardians of public honor and credit. Out of a controversy that pitted section against section, class against class in late nineteenth-century America, WaIter Nugent has fashioned a brilliant interpretive study. The debate over gold, silver, and greenbacks looms not merely as a struggle for political advantage but as one of the growing pains of a nation coming to power."; previous owner's name on pre-title page; including index - 127 pages. American Government and Politics
Faber & Faber, London, 1955. First Paperback Edition, Paperback. Near Fine/N/A. white titles spine; "after a brief account of the framing of the Constitution, of the ideas which lay behind it and of how those ideas have been changed and modified by the shifting currents of history and politics, Mr. Potter gives a full and lively explanation of the position today. Through the complex and sometimes bewildering maze of constitutional theory and practice, of the relationship between President, Congress and the Supreme Court, of the organization and policies of the political parties, of State government and local government, he is an unfailingly lucid guide. And he ends with a penetrating and very timely discussion of freedom and democracy in America today.
